Mindfulness is a way of paying careful attention to whatever is happening in our lives from moment to moment. For most of us, paying attention to our experience for even a few minutes can be very powerful. Most of the time our minds are easily distracted, shuttling between the past and future, and little time is actually spent living in the present.
Scientific studies have clearly demonstrated the power of mindfulness meditation in reducing stress. Practitioners commonly report an increased ability to relax, enhanced energy and enthusiasm for life, greater self-esteem, better concentration, and an ability to cope more effectively with stress at work and in other areas of daily life.
Mindfulness enhances and expands our capacity to listen deeply, make informed decisions, effectively handle stress, ignite innovation, and access previously untapped resources and apply them to the challenges we face every day. Only when we are fully present in the moment can we reach our highest potential and live a fulfilling life.
Recent state-of-the-art brain research suggests that mindfulness meditation can do even more than reduce stress and enhance coping skills - it can actually raise our emotional set-point, our default happiness level. For example, biotech workers who practiced mindfulness a half hour a day for two months had increased activation of the brain center associated with happiness and well-being and reported feeling healthier, more positive, and more relaxed.
