How sleep deprivation affects the corporate bottom line

Mental Workout today released a special report for wellness directors on how much sleep-deprived employees are costing companies and what to do about it.

Southampton, NY (October 1, 2014) – Mental Workout® today released a special report for wellness directors entitled ‘How sleep-deprived employees impact your bottom line and what you can do about it’, describing the economic consequences sleep has for businesses.

More than half the U.S. population doesn’t get enough sleep to function effectively. This hidden problem is likely costing companies $3,200+ per employee every year. Tackling it will lower healthcare costs, boost productivity, and increase profits.

The special report examines the most commonly-used sleep solutions and shows why they aren’t working. Instead, it suggests companies go beyond nap rooms and flex-time to offer a more comprehensive program based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi) delivered via employees’ mobile devices.

CBTi addresses the underlying causes of insomnia rather than just relieving symptoms. In a study comparing this method to the prescription drug, zopiclone, insomnia patients who underwent CBTi spent more time in the deep, restorative stages of sleep and showed lasting benefits six months later, while the group using the prescription meds had no lasting results.

Two studies focused on the use of mobile devices to assist with behavioral modification during CBT programs for depression and weight loss have proven this method can be effective.

"As a clinical psychologist, it has been incredibly difficult to affect and improve people’s sleep on a large scale until now. By combining CBTi techniques and mobile technology, we can now help millions of people in an entirely new way - anytime, anywhere - on their own terms," said Dr. Michael Breus (also known as The Sleep Doctor™), a well-known clinical psychologist who appears regularly on The Dr. Oz Show, CNN, The Doctors, CBS This Morning, and in The Huffington Post.

The white paper covers:

  • How much insomnia is costing companies and why
  • The drawbacks of workplace solutions like nap rooms and flextime
  • Why sleeping pills are not an answer
  • How to help employees get a good night’s sleep

"We are thrilled to be working with businesses to combat one of the most pervasive barriers to personal wellbeing", says Mickey Beyer-Clausen Founder and CEO of Mental Workout. “I hope this report will make businesses realize sleep is a gateway to wellness and consider how to better help their employees. The payoff will be worth it, whether you measure better performance, lower healthcare costs for employees, or all-around profitability.”
